A funny thing happened on the way to
the Tonight Show.....
In December of 2004, Tom Green of the
Tonight Show was in Colorado shooting a segment he does for Leno called "The
Most Interesting Person in (State)...."
For The Most Interesting Person in Colorado,
Tom wanted to do a segment on Grandpa Bredo. Everything went fine, and Tom said
afterwards, "THAT was the most interesting thing we've seen in Colorado
yet!" They eventually made a bit with five of the best segments from Colorado
and would probably bring out the winner on the show.
In mid January, Bo Shaffer (The Iceman)
got the call that the Tonight Show with Jay Leno was going to fly him out to
Burbank to appear on the show as Grandpa's Spokesman. the bit would be taped
and shown on Wednesday. They'd fly him out Tuesday, pick up from the airport
in a limo, put him up at the Universal Hilton, limo to the taping Wednesday
afternoon and back to the hotel, and limo to the airport on Thursday.

Tuesday afternoon at the Hotel, the Producer
calls Bo and tells him that the bit was being re-scheduled, due to a recent
avalanche in Utah where a man died. Apparently one of the other segments had
a big Buried in the Avalanche Bit.......which was deemed too insensitive. The
Producer said they would reschedule for mid February and do it all over again.
So, Bo got a two day vacation in LA at the expense of Jay Leno.......

After flying back to Colorado,on the
following Monday, Bo got the call from the Producer again.....
This time they had decided to move the
piece up to this Wednesday due to Tom Green's schedule being full in
February. After frantically rearranging schedules again, Bo was ready to fly
out Tuesday night. Late Tuesday afternoon, the Producer calls yet again.....
They had had a producers meeting earlier,
and everyone thought it would be in bad taste to present Jay with a Dead Guy
hat, or even discuss Dead Guys, three days after Johnny Carson died. Unfortunately,
they also needed to run the piece this month (due to Tom's schedule) and so,
they were going to have to pick a different winner. They called up the Ski Patroller
in Brekenridge and got him on the flight already booked for Bo......
And that's how it came to be that
the most interesting person in Colorado came to be a dog named Avvie.
Bo Sez - Note that the original time
slot was shifted due to a dead body encased in ice/snow in Utah. Later the project
was changed....due to another dead guy. Then a different Avalanche Person took
over the top dog position. There were a number of other (some personal) coincidences
through out the trip. Some were downright spooky. Like my hotel room number
being the year I was born, or like meeting the girl who knew both the Ski Patroller
and Avvie personally, and had watched the Tonight Show just to see them (and
of course saw us, too).......in my Denver Doctor's office the day after the
Show.
Coincidences, or ripples of Fate?
